News from France: a national survey on HAI from the A&P Sommer Foundation

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Adrienne & Pierre Sommer Foundation carried out a nationwide survey to capture the essence of HAI in France.
Over 1000 social service and healthcare establishments throughout the country responded. The data gathered presents the portrait of a multi-faceted field recognized for its distinctive contributions to human care strategies.
KEY FACTS AND FIGURES
> 70% of HAI programs in France are less than 3 years old, revealing a brisk pace of development throughout the country.
> Elderly and handicapped people are the most frequent beneficiaries of animal-assisted activities in France, via a broad range of institutions.
> The presence of HAI in French correctional institutions is especially noteworthy: 109 out of 187 French correctional institutions currently offer HAI activities.
> 80% of respondents would like to train members of their staff to lead animal-assisted activities.
> 51% of programs involve dogs, and 32% involve horses or donkeys. > Animal welfare is an irrefutable concern for all those responsible for programs.
