The Adrienne & Pierre Sommer Foundation is dedicated to advancing mutually respectful human-animal interaction (HAI) and animal-assisted interventions (AAI), where involving animals improves people’s lives.
Involving animals has proven a compelling means for professionals in social service and healthcare sectors to enhance their practices and more effectively help people deal with social, physical, sensorial, intellectual, and psychological handicaps or difficulties. The A&P Sommer Foundation provides funding for institutions in France offering animal-assisted programs characterized by clearly defined goals and evaluation schemes.
Interaction with animals can help all children to develop their sense of empathy, compassion, mutual respect, responsibility, and good citizenship. The A&P Sommer Foundation actively fosters children’s knowledge and awareness of animals through the distribution of educational materials and sponsorship of public events.
Since its creation in 1971, the A&P Sommer Foundation has expanded its activities from not only providing funding but also consciously encouraging and monitoring HAI development. The Foundation has enabled pioneering HAI programs in the French correctional system, commissioned national surveys and academic research, and formed national and international partnerships.
We want people to understand and take advantage of the subtle yet essential benefits of having animals in our lives.
